| A key role for parents | | Posted Sunday, February 04, 2007 2:58:15 PM by Blog57 Team | | If you thought the show "CSI" or the Grand Theft Auto video games were popular, then you probably haven't been introduced to the most trendy Internet sites and teen obsessions of our time. Racking in millions of users each day, it's a wonder they don't put every other form of entertainment out of business. They are the places where teens "facebook" one another through comment and pictures. I've heard parents talk about how their child posted scandalous pictures on MySpace or sexual videos on YouTube, possibly luring fortysomethings disguised as 15-year-olds, ready to prey on innocent young children with little knowledge about the outside world.... | |

Pervasive gaming took electronic games into a new levelthat is, on street level across barangays, towns, and even cities. This location-based games use not only new technology but also focuses on the simple fact that it is more fun playing as a team than on your own. Players not only play on foot, they also may travel by car, boat, or even airplane. | | | Wireless profits not about calls right now | | Posted Sunday, November 12, 2006 11:01:42 AM by Blog57 Team | | For the billions they've spent to upgrade their wireless networks, cell-phone companies are now trumpeting quarter after quarter of strong gains in revenue from services other than phone calls -- from messaging and games to music and video clips, as well as wireless Internet access for laptops. But a closer look at the numbers raises some question as to whether these flashy added fea tures can be relied upon for long- term growth in the wireless business, or if they'll merely serve as a way to stay even, making up for revenue lost to fierce price competition on the voice side. Verizon Wireless, a standout performer in the U.S. cellular market, recently set another industry high-bar by nearly doubling its third-quarter revenue from non- voice services, to $1.2billion, led by text and picture messaging, ring tone sales and laptop subscrip tions.... | |

| | | Internet games skirt sugary snacks ad ban | | Posted Sunday, November 05, 2006 12:56:57 PM by Blog57 Team | | INTERNET games promoting sugary snacks to children are beyond the reach of a new code on advertising aimed at reducing obesity. The advertising industry yesterday unveiled a code that bans ads using parent pester techniques, and limits the use of personalities and gifts to promote the products. The code was made public at a forum at Federal Parliament, which heard that an economics report showed obesity was costing Australia $21 billion a year. But "advergames", easily accessible on the internet and featuring popular children's snacks and drinks, were outside the code's control, the Australian Association of National Advertisers said. The games include the "Tour de Cocoland" bike race that children can play on the Kellogg's Coco Pops website.... | |
