And today Internet access means broadband Internet access. Nationally, a large and growing majority of Internet users connect at home via broadband access, not by dial-up. Wireless connectivity for cellular telephones and handheld devices is also playing an increasingly important role in the world....

WASHINGTON - The first shots of the 2008 White House race are echoing across the Internet, as candidates take to the campaign trail online targeting tech-savvy young voters while bypassing traditional media. From blogs, to social networking and video sites to the online virtual world that is Second Life, politicians are rolling out Web strategies in a campaign set to be dominated by cyberspace as never before. Former first lady Hillary Clinton at the weekend became the latest presidential candidate to announce her campaign in a Web video and on Monday launched a series of online chats. Last week, rising Democratic star Senator Barack Obama posted a video saying he had taken the first step on the road he hopes will lead to the White House. Defeated 2004 Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards used the backdrop of hurricane-wrecked New Orleans for a Web video launching his own 2008 run....

United Internet Third-Quarter Net Rises on Web Users (Update1)

Nov. 10 (Bloomberg) -- United Internet AG, Germany's second- largest Web access provider, said third-quarter profit almost doubled after the company added broadband users. Net income rose to 33 million euros ($42.4 million), or 14 cents a share, from 15.7 million euros, or 7 cents, a year earlier, spokesman Marcus Schaps said by telephone today. Sales rose 52 percent to 316.9 million euros, the company said in a statement. Profit beat the median estimate of 29.3 million euros from a Bloomberg News survey of six analysts. United Internet, founded in 1988 by Chief Executive Officer Ralph Dommermuth, expanded into Web services under the 1&1 and GMX brands and took market share from market leader Deutsche Telekom AG. The former monopoly yesterday reported a 20 percent drop in profit and said it will defend its market share by offering combined Web and phone packages....

Softbank Swings Back to Black

Softbank Corp. said Wednesday it swung back into the black for the fiscal first-half by cutting its broadband Internet service promotion costs, acquiring mobile phone operations and brisk e-commerce and advertising business. The Internet services company reported a 14.44 billion yen (US$122.37 million; euro96 million) net profit for the six-month period through Sept. 30, compared with a 4.18 billion yen loss the same period of last year. Sales at Softbank, which acquired Vodafone Group Plc's Japan unit in April, rose to 1.120 trillion yen (US$9.49 billion; euro7.44 billion) from 522.79 billion yen a year earlier. Softbank's Chief Executive Officer Masayoshi Son told reporters that his company's mobile unit, Softbank Mobile, has lost a net 21,000 subscribers since the start of number portability in Japan last month....

Officials with Eagle Broadband, Inc. Broadband subscriber numbers grew 63 percent to 800,000 people in the first half of 2006 compared to H1 2005, and is expected to exceed 1 million by the end of the year, analysts say. At the same time, they note a slowing in this segment's growth in Moscow from last year's 120 percent. Moscow is by far the leader in terms of broadband penetration, with 20 percent and rising as of mid-2006, against an average 3.5 percent in Russia at large. The most popular technology on the market is Ethernet with 57 percent of all broadband subscribers (through local home providers and Corbina, Qwerty, and Akado)....

Nearly 90% of Taiwan broadband users using xDSL at the end of June

Taiwan had 4.276 million home/business subscribers of broadband fixed-line Internet services at the end of June 2006, with 89.8% of them using xDSL, according to a quarterly survey conducted by ACI-IDEA-FIND. ACI-IDEA-FIND, the Focus on Internet News & Data and Innovation Diffusion Enabler & Activator of Advanced e-Commerce Institute, is a unit under the government-sponsored Institute for Information Industry (III). Of the xDSL subscribers, 91% and 9% were households and businesses, respectively, while 62% used download speeds 1.5Mbps or greater. In addition to fixed-line access to the Internet, there were 8.875 million home/business subscribers of mobile Internet services through GPRS (general packet radio service), WAP (wireless application protocol), PHS (personal handyphone system) and 3G (third-generation) modes at the end of June....
